ooops

Category: raves — blogger @ 9:35 am

What if all the data you have worked on for months are deleted accidentally? I bet people will freak out because the have been worked on with blood, sweat, and tears. Now imagine losing 38 billion dollar worth of data. Now that is a big one, not only data-wise but money wise.

Find out the details of the story here

Moral of the story? Don’t just back up your files. Verify if the backups are actually working.

It also helps when you have a good old hard copy. Old school but still gets the job done.

Haven’t You Noticed?

Category: rants — blogger @ 5:08 am

…..that some people here speak to blue collar workers in english whenever they are upset?  I just noticed it again when we were eating in one of the restaurants in one of the malls here in Ortigas.  We were in the Mall and we went to this seafood/hawaiian resto where we regularly eat.  The place is unusually crowded,  and this is because there is this company-sponsored dinner going on.  Since I’m craving for seafood,  especially crab, we waited for us to be accomodated.  We even thought that the place has been rented exclusively for the place but the waiter told us that it is not so we waited for some more.  Once we were seated, and since we know how busy the waiters are, we just asked for them to serve the drinks first.  While waiting for the order, I can’t help but overhear a woman who has been upset for quite sometime because of something that I can’t even remember.  Anyways, the woman, has been upset since we got there and waited for our turn to be served and she hasn’t stopped complaining, in English.  I’m not sure what is his point there but i am pretty sure she is filipino.

I have noticed that a lot of times, where some people who are upset to blue collar workers such as guards, waiters, and drivers, complain in English.  Is it because they won’t be able to reply back or will just agree with what upset people are ranting about?  People doing this just shows how arrogant they are, that they can be above the law when they speak in a foreign language.  I can’t help but pity those skilled workers who are just doing their assigned tasks.

Speaking a foreign language in these situations is not a sign of an educated person.  Don’t look down on somebody else because they are doing their job, respect them and you will be rewarded just like us, who got a complementary potato salad and nachos in the end :)

Windows Vista + Itunes = Problems

Category: reviews — blogger @ 12:50 am

If you are thinking of using Itunes on a Windows Vista, think again. Apple has announced that there are still compatibility issues with Windows latest platform and both companies are still working on glitches to fix the issue. Although most of the known issues has been fixed on the new version of Itunes (Itunes 7.1), there are still known glitches like making your ipod corrupt when it is ejected from PC.

Other known issue is its ability to sync windows contact to an Ipod and the Itunes graphics and text not displaying correctly (although a resize of the window fixes the problem, it is still a glitch). Itunes is still unsupported on 64-bit platform.

Gods are Against the Lakers

Category: rants — blogger @ 7:03 am

Okay okay I’m a Laker fan, and I’m not blaming God. It’s just that frustrating that aside from injuries, the Lakeshow will lose another player in Kobe Bryant. KB24 is suspended for striking Marko Jaric in their game against the Timberwolves yesterday.

They are already out with a bunch of players, Chris Mihm (when are you going to play bro?), Luke Walton (having a career year), Vladimir Radmanovic (nice mini vacation huh?), Ronny Turiaf (injured in their last game but will probably play hobbled), Kwame Brown (came back from injury but not 100% yet). Did i miss someone? Oh, did I ever mentioned that Zen Master Phil has his hip corrected during the off season?

Not even a good GM can turn the Lakers from the misery they have right now. But who’s blaming them? it’s natural for injuries to happen but for them to go down like flies being swatted? There must be a conspiracy against my favorite team LOL.

Anyway, I just hope the team can hold on to a playoff spot and pray that help will come by that time (Pip are you listening?). If they win the championship this year, Imagine how sweet it will be for the guys in purple and gold.

Sunday Afternoon Rant

Category: rants — blogger @ 8:45 pm

It was one of those sunday afternoon where you can’t watch anything but those showbiz-oriented talk shows. I was having a difficult time thinking of what to do: Going online is out of the question, been online most of the week and going online on a Sunday is out of the question (until now, of course). After playing NBA Live, I went outside to see if I can catch up with my friends but nobody is around. Running out of things to do, I took my chance and checked if there are PBA games on hand. Lucky me, It was the start of the second conference and the second game is about to start: Purefoods vs Red Bull. My plan is to write about the game until the commentators were looking forward not on the game itself, but on how Purefoods guard James Yap will play and the production crew even had this silly short clip about him and the controversy surrounding him.

I was like “wtf, I just want to watch basketball, nothing else.” It’s not that i’m not aware of what’s happening to him, everybody here knows that, to the point where I don’t know if everybody remembered EDSA last week when everybody is glued to those showbiz talk shows. Much as I tried to concentrate on watching the game, I can’t help but notice the commentators mention his name, and the cameraman look for James Yap posters on the sideline.

James Yap the basketball player is not your ordinary baller. First off, he is the first, if not the only college player who endorsed converse basketball shoes when everybody was wearing their nike and adidas. Second, he’s a UE player in the mold of an Allan Caidic. He and Ritualo are two of the purest shooters in the PBA today. I stated this because this is how he should be described on the court, controversy or no controversy. Yes his wife is famous and they are in a middle of a problem, but I think it is fair to call the game as it is.

I had enough of these commentators already. I might as well try catching soccer on cable. Ciao

Bloggers, Update your Wordpress Immediately

Category: rants — blogger @ 12:20 pm

Got this from a colleague: There was an exploit reported to wordpress Yesterday, March 2, 2007 about an “unusual and highly exploitable code in wordpress” and further investigation showed that the code has been altered from the original one, thus declaring the whole version as exploitable.

Long story short: If you downloaded WordPress 2.1.1 within the past 3-4 days, your files may include a security exploit that was added by a cracker, and you should upgrade all of your files to 2.1.2 immediately.

Longer explanation: This morning we received a note to our security mailing address about unusual and highly exploitable code in WordPress. The issue was investigated, and it appeared that the 2.1.1 download had been modified from its original code. We took the website down immediately to investigate what happened.

It was determined that a cracker had gained user-level access to one of the servers that powers wordpress.org, and had used that access to modify the download file. We have locked down that server for further forensics, but at this time it appears that the 2.1.1 download was the only thing touched by the attack. They modified two files in WP to include code that would allow for remote PHP execution.

This is the kind of thing you pray never happens, but it did and now we’re dealing with it as best we can. Although not all downloads of 2.1.1 were affected, we’re declaring the entire version dangerous and have released a new version 2.1.2 that includes minor updates and entirely verified files. We are also taking lots of measures to ensure something like this can’t happen again, not the least of which is minutely external verification of the download package so we’ll know immediately if something goes wrong for any reason.

Finally, we reset passwords for a number of users with SVN and other access, so you may need to reset your password on the forums before you can login again.

Wordpress has immediately released wordpress 2.1.2 to fix the issue

You can view the whole article on wordpress’s website

Let us give a head’s up to the wordpress people, who have fixed the issue as fast as possible.  Let us do our part by doing the necessary.

A new strain of virus is spreading rapidly and could affect lots of businesses, especially those who are database dependent

A disgruntled hacker with a personal grudge against Symantec, which provides anti-virus software to leading Fortune 500 companies, could be behind a new, crippling computer virus that’s already hit a division of at least one big U.S. corporation on Thursday.

If it spreads, technology experts warn the latest strains of the insidious RINBOT computer virus could hijack network systems of businesses worldwide.
